Sabbath

So, for my Issues of Integrity in the Church class that I took last week (yes, a 3 hour class in one week's time - ack!), I wrote a paper on how a minister can communicate effectively the need for minister's to have a time of Sabbath. While this is important for everyone, for most ministers, Sunday is not a day of Sabbath. I utilized several resources in writing this paper, but the one that most grabbed my attention is a book by Marva Dawn called The Sense of the Call: A Sabbath Way of Life for Those Who Serve God, the Church, and the World. I haven't made it all the way through the book yet (it's just over 300 pages long), but it has been a wonderful read so far. The professor who taught the class I took even caught me at the school this week to give me an article he had found by Marva Dawn. It is a sermon out of Exodus 31:12-18 called Sabbath Keeping: An Enormous Gift for Our Spirituality. I hope to share more with yall as I read more of this book.

My big commitment this school semester is going to be to take Sundays off from doing anything school related. The fall semester about killed me. I did schoolwork seven days a week and I never felt like I could get caught up. So this semester, I made a list of all the due dates for every assignment for the entire semester as I got my syllabus. Then last night, I spent 3 hours making a schedule that included taking Sundays off, but still getting all more school assignments done in a timely manner. I was pleased to see that it is totally feasible and I can still have Sunday as my Sabbath.

This is a big step for me. Yall who know me in real life know that I am constantly going and rarely stop to take a breath. However, I know that I cannot continue in this manner. Please pray with me and for me as I take this big step!

How about you? Do you observe a Sabbath? If not, would you consider joining me?

  1. I keep Sabbath on Saturdays from Sunset to Sunset. We try to have a light supper. We have family time/worship. Sabbath morning is church. Sabbath afternoon the girls usually rest and the rest of us watch Christian programing on TV. I absolutely love SABBATH!!!
